The man stank of ale and grievance.

He leaned over the counter as if daring it to move, one hand dusted white with flour, his voice loud enough to be heard from the street. “I’m not askin’ for charity,” he slurred. “Just bread. You’ve got plenty.”

The Knight stepped into view without hurry. The drunk noticed him late – then all at once. His words faltered, rearranged themselves.

“What’s this?” the man sneered weakly. “You her guard dog?”

“She said no,” the Knight replied. Calm. Even. “You heard her.”

The drunk laughed, but it lacked conviction. “Didn’t even listen. Just stared at me like I was nothing.”

“You were shouting,” the Knight said. “And this isn’t a tavern.”

That settled heavier than a threat. The man’s eyes flicked past him, toward the quiet back rooms, toward the people who had stopped moving altogether.

“So that’s it?” he muttered.

“That’s it,” said the Knight. “You can leave now, or you can make this the worst part of your day.”

The man hesitated, wiped his hand on his coat, and turned away. The doorbell rang too brightly as he left.

The Knight watched the door until it stilled, then turned back toward the warmth of the bakery.
