The bakery settled into a strained equilibrium. From the back rooms where the family lived, JumJum Piebelly’s husband emerged, wiping flour from his hands as though he had been interrupted mid-thought. He took in the room at a glance—the counter, the tables, the raised voice—then moved to stand beside JumJum without a word. Their exchange was brief and practiced, the sort that required no explanation between them.
That unspoken coordination was tested by a customer whose patience had thinned beyond courtesy. His voice rose again, carrying the brittle edge of grievance, and nearby work slowed in response. Small disturbances have a way of claiming space, and this one had begun to do just that.
Near the center table, a single cake rested apart from the others. Finished, undecorated, and set where it caught the light, it bore no sign of neglect. Its placement felt deliberate, waiting rather than forgotten, as though its purpose had been delayed rather than dismissed.
